From Hardcastle Crags south to Featherbed Top, the Pennine Way cuts through Calderdale and the northern Peak District, separating the industrial towns of Oldham and Huddersfield. The Calder, Colne and Holme rivers cut deep valleys into the Pennine moorlands, with sheep on the hillsides and weavers' villages and mill towns—such as Golcar and Marsden in the Colne valley—tucked into the valley bottoms. In these parts, town and country are within easy reach of each other. The Holme valley is best known today as 'Summer Wine Country', Holmfirth being the setting for the TV series Last of the Summer Wine. |
